Rockford Public Schools is completing the formal process to request a waiver from the state for its elementary physical education schedule.
This is not a new change. RPS 205 has scheduled fewer PE classes for many years.
The district is now completing the formal process to get state approval for its current approach, which helps schools balance PE with reading, math, music, art, and other learning opportunities.
What families need to know
No changes to current schedules: Students will continue with their current schedules.
Formal state approval: RPS 205 is going through the required process to request a waiver from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
More scheduling flexibility: The waiver would allow schools to schedule PE one or two days per week, based on their schedules and available space.
Students stay active: Students will continue to have opportunities for physical activity, including daily elementary playtime and recess.
Why is RPS 205 requesting a waiver?
Illinois generally requires elementary students to have PE at least three days during a five-day school week. Many RPS schools have only one gym, making it difficult to meet this requirement without affecting other learning opportunities.
The waiver would give schools more flexibility to protect reading and math instruction, provide extra help for students who need it, and keep music, art, and other classes in students’ schedules.
What happens next?
The RPS 205 Board of Education is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the proposed waiver during its October 20, 2026, Board meeting. The Board is also expected to consider approving the application for submission to ISBE.
If approved by the Board, the district plans to submit the application by November 4, 2026. The state will then review the request.
Families and community members are welcome to attend the public hearing to learn more about the proposal.
RPS 205 is committed to giving students opportunities to learn, explore their interests, and stay active.
