Since 2001, the Rockford Rotary Club has partnered with RPS 205 and the Rockford Public Library for the Rockford Reads program. This program is designed to enhance the literacy development of second-grade students in Rockford Public Schools.
Second grade is a crucial year in a child’s reading journey. During this time, reading allows them to learn new vocabulary, meet literacy milestones, and develop a love for reading.
Once a week, community volunteers read one-on-one with second graders for as little as one hour per week at the elementary school of their choice. The program runs through the end of May, and volunteers are welcome to start anytime during the school year.
Interested community volunteers are required to complete the Rockford Public Schools Volunteer Form: https://www.rps205.com/documents/community/volunteer/volunteer-forms/594425
This includes a background check authorization.
The completed form can be sent to facedepartment@rps205.com or mailed to:
Family & Community Engagement Department
2nd Floor
501 7th Street
Rockford, IL 61104
Rockford Rotary will contact the volunteers to discuss their school assignment and start date.
The results of this program have been excellent academically, socially, and emotionally for the students.
