Jefferson students are busy working on their house for Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity. Trusses got delivered, & the students helped with the installation. Miguel got to mark the top of the walls where the trusses go. Alex was able to do the job of connecting the trusses to the crane for each truss. The roof decking & shingles are going on too. Students put on the hurricane ties that hold the trusses to the walls and added the drywall nails to the ceiling. They even adopted a friendly kitty at the site that they call GITI. The students bring canned food for it every once in a while.

Popular author Gordon Korman visited Flinn Middle School. He wrote his first book when he was in 7th grade & published it when he was in 9th grade! Gordon talked about how he wrote his first novel when he was only twelve — a four-month-long seventh-grade language arts assignment that produced THIS CAN’T BE HAPPENING AT MACDONALD HALL, which was published by Scholastic when he was 14. Gordon talked about research, brainstorming, developing characters, dialogue, rewriting & revision, and humor. Flinn invited Gordon Korman to share his love of writing, his experience, and writing strategies to encourage students to become better writers themselves.
